Review: LiberTEAs’ Tomato, Basil & Black Pepper tea

Author: DaisyChubb | Filed under: Review, Tea

This tea is perfect for my first blog review!

Although this is a personal blog, I couldn’t really do it without the help and support of my friends. I treasure friends over anything and everything. This particular tea came from a friend from Steepster, LiberTEAS. She is also the co-founder of my favourite Tea Review blog SororiTea Sisters, an artist, blogger, amazing person… and the inspiration for this tea: LiberTEAs’ Tomato, Basil & Black Pepper tea by 52teas.

She was kind enough to include it in our tea swap, and I am over the moon! So excited for this amazing and unique blend! Ah! And so – my first tea review will be tea from a friend.

I steeped it for the recommended 3 minutes, as is my usual for 52teas black teas. It came out perfect – a pale red/orange like a fresh tomato soup. Drool. I should say, I had super sweet pulled pork and sweetened muesli for lunch, which left me wanting something savory and salty, but also light. This tea delivers!

The smell actually has a bit of sweetness to it. I can definitely smell the sun-dried tomatoes and basil. The taste is out of this world crazy! Wow. The pepper has a little kick right at the end of the sip. The basil is nice and strong, and I get a little sweet savoury taste of tomato. Now I’m craving a pizza or fresh spicy tomato sauce. mm!

The best part about this tea – it’s still a tea! I can smell and taste the black tea, it’s smooth and smoky and the perfect base for these unique flavours. The pinch of salt added gives serious depth to all the flavours.

The next time I try this tea (I have enough for one more cup!) I’m going to put a splash of Frank’s Red Hot in. I’m really craving a spicy kick on my tongue, so I think that will be the cherry on top. Or.. the hot sauce on top. That’s more accurate.

Recap:

1.5 tsp tea

16 oz boiling water

3 min

pinch of salt

my notes: sweet, savoury, salty! basil, pepper, liquid pizza, good for 2 steeps

  1. I enjoyed reading your review of this tea. I hadn’t thought of adding hot sauce to this but I bet it’d be awesome like that too. I sometimes add a thin slice (or two) of garlic to the smart brewer as it infuses, which adds a nice bit of flavor to the cup too. I absolutely love this tea, although I don’t think that Frank will ever reblend it. LOL! It was difficult enough to get him to blend it the first time!

  3. oooh garlic that sounds wonderful too! Sometimes teas have a savoury note – but they don’t even come close to this one.
I hope you have a good stash, because I think you’re right about the reblend!
Thanks again for sending some my way, I enjoyed it very much (and will probably take you up on that garlic thing for my next cup ;) )

  4. What a unique tea! I never thought of teas as savory, but they totally can be.

  8. Thank you!
Oh boy here’s comes the magic: The DRINKIN JAR was a few bucks at Canadian Tire, and the steeper is from DavidsTea – it came with my “Perfect Mug”.
MAGIC! :D!! But yeah mason jars with handles are amazesauce. I miss you.
